Ski touring in Finnmark
Perfect for ski tourers, explorers, and anyone drawn to wide horizons and wilderness.

Where is Finnmark?
Finnmark is Norway’s northernmost county, stretching all the way to the Barents Sea and bordering both Finland and Russia. With its open plateaus, deep fjords, and striking peaks that rise directly from the Arctic Ocean, Finnmark offers a sense of space and remoteness that is unmatched elsewhere in the country.
The region covers an immense area – and includes famous ski destinations such as Lyngen’s northern continuation around Altafjorden, the Lyngen-like peaks of Øksfjord and Loppa, and the coastal ranges of Kvænangen and Nordkinn. Skiing here means moving through landscapes shaped by both Arctic light and Arctic weather.
Why Finnmark
Few places in Europe offer such a blend of coastal mountains, tundra, and Arctic fjords. Skiing in Finnmark means solitude, silence, and the possibility of long descents with ocean views. Unlike Sunnmøre or Lofoten, where the terrain is compact and dramatic, Finnmark’s appeal lies in its openness and variety: gentle rounded summits, steep couloirs, and long traverses across untouched snowfields.
The region is also famous for its light. In midwinter, the polar night creates deep blue landscapes and the chance to ski under the northern lights. By late spring, endless days and midnight sun allow for tours at any hour, making Finnmark truly unique in the ski world.

Ski Touring
The main ski season runs from February to May, with stable snow and long days in spring. Unlike other ski destinations in Norway the stable winter starts already early November witch means skiing with headlamps is a possibility for people seeking a special experience. Coastal mountains around Øksfjord, Loppa, and Kvænangen offer classic summit-to-sea skiing, while inland areas near Alta and Karasjok provide endless touring terrain across rolling plateaus and valleys.
Skiing from boat is also a highlight. Many expeditions use small boats to access remote fjords where mountains rise directly from the ocean. This combination of ski mountaineering and Arctic seafaring makes Finnmark an adventure unlike anywhere else.
Conditions are generally cold and dry inland, with maritime snowpacks along the coast. The variety of terrain makes it possible to plan both mellow days and ambitious alpine objectives.
Accommodation
Finnmark’s accommodation ranges from simple fisherman’s cabins and guesthouses along the fjords.
Øksfjord, Langfjorden and Loppa are ideal bases for staying close to a lot of skiing. Remote lodges and local guesthouses provide authentic Arctic atmosphere, often with direct access to ski terrain right outside the door.
For those seeking a truly local experience, staying in rorbuer (traditional seaside cabins) along the fjords allows you to combine skiing with fishing culture and Arctic coastal life.
