Rock climbing in Romsdalen

Romsdalen – fjords, mountains and adventure

Romsdalen is one of Norway’s most iconic climbing areas, offering a rare combination of sport climbing, trad climbing, and alpine adventures in spectacular natural surroundings. The area is known for its big walls, sharp ridges, and historical routes, but also for modern crags with solid rock and well-bolted lines.

Climbing in Romsdalen

The sport climbing in Romsdalen is of very high quality and offers a surprising number of options – even when the weather isn’t perfect. Several crags feature steep formations and natural overhangs, making it possible to climb even on rainy days. With views of fjords and mountains, you’ll find technical challenges in majestic surroundings.

For those seeking bigger objectives, the mountains around Trollveggen (the Troll Wall), Trollstigen, and Bispen provide access to classic trad routes and alpine lines. The legendary peaks that can earn you the title of Fjellkonge (mountain-king) or Fjelldronning (mountain-queen) – seven prominent summits that can be linked together in long traverses – offer a strong and rewarding summer goal. Here, you’ll find everything from easy ridge climbs to exposed, demanding routes with great variety.

Climbing in Romsdalen is just as much about atmosphere and presence as it is about the route itself. Whether you’re working a sport climb in the fjord breeze or standing at a belay station with the Troll Wall in view, you’ll feel that this is a place with soul, history, and true mountain spirit.
