Ski touring in Romsdalen

Romsdalen – fjords, mountains and adventure

Romsdalen is one of Norway’s most spectacular mountain destinations, known for its dramatic peaks, deep valleys, and proximity to both fjords and ocean. Often referred to as the Chamonix of the North, the area reflects a unique combination of steep mountains, alpine opportunities, and easy access.

Why Romsdalen?

Romsdalen is widely known as a world-class ski touring destination. The many mountains – including Skarven, Kirketaket, and Smørbottindene – provide access to fantastic terrain for everyone from beginners to seasoned skiers. Snow conditions vary throughout the season. Frequent low-pressure systems from the Atlantic often result in excellent conditions from January through late May. When spring arrives in mid-May, Trollstigen opens – a mountain plateau at 800 metres above sea level. From here, you can park your car and enjoy the snow-rich high mountains.

With views of the fjord from the summits and untouched wilderness on the descents, ski touring in Romsdalen offers an experience that is hard to match. For many, the combination of easy access, dramatic alpine surroundings, and great experiences even off the mountain is one of the many reasons people from all over the world come here.

How to get here

Romsdalen is easily accessible from most parts of Norway – and from abroad. You can fly to Molde or Ålesund and rent a car from there. Alternatively, you can fly to Oslo and take the train north to Åndalsnes, enjoying one of Norway’s most scenic rail journeys through dramatic mountain landscapes. If you book a trip with us, we can arrange pick-up at the train station in Åndalsnes by agreement.
