Sunnmøre and Hjørundfjord
This guide to Sunnmøre gives you everything you need to know – from how to get here, where to stay, and why this region is among Norway’s most breathtaking mountain destinations. Perfect for climbers, skiers, and outdoor enthusiasts planning their next adventure in Norway.

Where is Sunnmøre?
Sunnmøre lies on the western coast of Norway, in Møre og Romsdal county, with the famous Hjørundfjord at its heart. Surrounded by some of the country’s most dramatic alpine peaks – including Slogen, Jakta, and Kolåstinden – this is a region where mountains rise steeply straight from the fjord. Sunnmøre is often described as the very definition of fjord-alpine terrain, with unrivalled access to wild nature.
Geographically, Sunnmøre stretches south of Ålesund and inland toward Stranda and Ørsta. The area is well connected by road, ferry, and plane – and offers quick access to world-class terrain.
Why Sunnmøre
Here, you’ll find everything from quiet valleys and lush farmland to sheer ridges, glaciers, and towering summits. The contrast between the fjord below and sharp summits above makes this a natural magnet for climbers, skiers, and explorers.
This is the home of legendary peaks such as Slogen, often called the “Queen of Sunnmøre,” and Kolåstinden, a classic ski and mountaineering peak. But Sunnmøre also offers countless smaller mountains, ridges, and ski summits – all framed by the deep-blue waters of the fjords. The mix of accessibility and dramatic scale is what sets this region apart.

Ski Touring
Sunnmøre is world-renowned for ski touring. Few places offer the same combination of fjord views and alpine descents. From feb through May, the snow conditions are reliable, with a long spring season that allows for high peaks and big days.
In good years, skiing from summit to fjord is possible well into late spring. The diversity of terrain – from mellow valleys to steep alpine faces – makes Sunnmøre suitable for both beginners and seasoned ski mountaineers.
Accommodation
Sunnmøre offers some of Norway’s most atmospheric places to stay. On the western side of the Hjørundfjord lies Sæbø, a small village that makes an ideal base for ski tours and climbs in every direction. With its quiet fjord setting and direct access to boat transport, Sæbø is both convenient and scenic.
For a truly unique experience, Hotel Union Øye is the region’s most iconic mountaineering hotel. Built in 1891, it has hosted explorers, climbers, and royals for over a century. Staying here places you at the foot of the Sunnmøre Alps, with immediate access to classic peaks like Slogen and Jakta. The combination of history, comfort, and proximity to world-class mountains makes Øye an unforgettable base.

Weather and Climate
Sunnmøre has a maritime climate, with weather systems arriving quickly from the Atlantic. Conditions can shift rapidly – from sunshine to snow showers within the same day. The fjord influence creates marked microclimates, so flexibility is key when planning.
The ski season typically lasts from January to May, with some years allowing skiing into June on north-facing slopes. Summer climbing is best from June through September, with long days and mostly dry conditions. Autumn brings vibrant colors, dramatic light, and crisp air – perfect for hiking and climbing before winter returns.
Geologically, the Sunnmøre Alps are shaped by glaciers and consist largely of hard gneiss and granite, which create sharp ridges and steep walls. This combination of solid rock, alpine relief, and fjord scenery explains why Sunnmøre is often called one of the most beautiful mountain regions in Europe.
